Here's the part nobody tells you

The built-in shelf bra was invented decades ago, and hasn't changed since.

For decades, brands could have made a better-feeling shirt, but never made the investment in innovation. A strip of elastic sewn into a tank was cheaper, so a strip of elastic is what you got — marketed as progress. No real support, no elastics worth wearing.

We made the change they wouldn't. Real engineered support, built into the garment, for a wide range of bodies A through G.

1500s–1900s

The corset

Fabric stiffened with stays of whalebone, horn or wood and laced tight. It reigned, painfully, for roughly 500 years.

1869

Cut in two

French inventor Herminie Cadolle sliced the corset in half, freeing the bust into a separate garment she called "well-being" — the first modern bra, shown at the 1900 Paris World Expo.

1914

The brassiere, patented

Socialite Mary "Polly" Phelps Jacob patented a "backless brassiere," famously two handkerchiefs and some pink ribbon. The bra as we know it was born.

1930s

Cup sizes arrive

Manufacturers finally separated chest size from cup volume. S.H. Camp and Warner brought the A–B–C–D system to the masses.

1977

The sports bra

Lisa Lindahl and friends sewed two jockstraps together into the first "Jogbra." Genuinely useful, and basically the last big idea for decades.

~1990s

The "built-in"

A strip of elastic sewn into a tank, sold as innovation. It did approximately nothing, and nobody bothered to fix it.

Today

Real, engineered support built into the garment itself, A–G. The first honest rethink in over a century.
